When you're in some vocations it is difficult to separate yourself from work since individuals like to request advice. This is something which I experience quite often because I'm a social worker. When folks find this out they like to request my view about what they should do about different circumstances, usually involving one of their neighbors or relatives. This can grow bothersome, but being in a helping profession this is part of the job. Many people do not know where to turn to get services for mental health needs, consequently they find it easier to ask somebody they know how to do this.
The majority of the affiliates of our faith community know that I'm a social worker. We had an event that occurred during a church occasion that called for my knowledge. We were gathered in our community area for a potluck supper one Sunday evening. One of the church members was sitting off on their own. I have spoken to her at other events and she has told me that she has difficulties with anxiety. When I saw her I noticed that her skin texture was flushed and she seemed to be having a difficult time controlling her breathing. I recognized the early symptoms of an anxiety attack. I knew that they would intensify rather speedily. I quietly asked our pastor if he would open his office. I went over to the woman and asked her to come into the pastor's office with me. While we were walking towards the office she informed me that she was having sharp chest pains. She does not have a past record of heart disease so I figured that the pains were yet another of the indications of an anxiety assault. After we were in the office I had her concentrate on doing some deep breathing routines with me. I peacefully rubbed her fingers and kept repeating the directives for the breathing which I was doing with her. She had once been heavily sweating so I opened a window, even though it was very cold outside. The cold air together with the deep breathing started to calm her. She admitted that she had once been quite anxious over the past couple of days and that she had not taken her medication that day. As we talked the majority of the symptoms of the apprehension attack dissipated.
Our church is very near a hospital and I asked her if she wished to be checked there to make sure that the chest pains had been part of the apprehension. She told me that she was certain they were and that if she had just a couple more minutes to compose herself she thought that she would have the capacity to leave for home. I told her that no one in the gathering had seen our departure since they were conversing and having hor d'ouevres. She agreed to join me in the group with the promise that I would take her home the minute she asked. She ended up staying for the majority of the evening. She told me when I drove her home that if she had been alone she would have called an ambulance due to the fact that she thought the symptoms of the apprehension assault were a heart assault instead. I assured her that this was a common error and that she should be more conscious of how her anxiety impacts her.
